Pentagon's Uphill Battle Coming to Breck

By Stephanie Simon
Wall Street Journal
March 25, 2011
Benjamin Levine is spending the spring recruiting college students in Dallas for an all-expenses paid vacation to the Rocky Mountains. Naturally, there’s a catch. The students will spend their time in Breckenridge, CO, doing sit-ups, push-ups, wind sprints and a 12-mile hike to an elevation of 12,000 feet. If it all goes as planned, some will also get quite sick.
The new research aims to develop a simple, inexpensive blood test that will predict which soldiers are most likely to get altitude sickness. Commanders could then plan accordingly – by distributing medication, giving troops who are sensitive to altitude time to acclimate at lower elevations, or even redrawing battle plans so those units most likely to be depleted by illness aren’t sent out on crucial missions right away.
While the military is funding the new research, a predictive blood test could also be marketed to the public, Dr. Roach said. That could benefit Colorado’s ski industry, which says up to 40% of its visitors come down with mountain sickness. The Institute for Altitude Medicine in Telluride , CO estimates the illness damps spending at mountain resorts by $200 million a year, as afflicted tourists don’t much feel like shopping, skiing or dining out.

Vail plans upgrades after strong 2nd quarter
Lauren Glendenning
Summit Daily News
March 12, 2011
Early season snowfall, an improving economy and the newly acquired Northstar-at-Tahoe resort helped add to Vail Resorts' success during the second quarter of the fiscal year.
Overall, the company's mountain-related earnings were up $57.3 million over the same period last year including earnings at Northstar-at-Tahoe, which accounted for $30.1 million of the revenue.
Vail Resorts spent in the neighborhood of $80 million in the 2010 fiscal year on resort upgrades, and Katz said Thursday the company plans to spend $83 million to $93 million in resort upgrades this year, not including the $30 million or so it plans to spend just at Northstar-at-Tahoe.

Summit County sees spike in population
By Caddie Nath
Summit Daily News
March 1,2011
Summit County's permanent population swelled to more than 27,000 people, according to the most recent U.S. Census data, an approximately 15 percent increase from 2000 counts. But the Census numbers fall short of county projections, which estimate a 25.8 percent increase in population — a total permanent resident base of more than 29,600 people.
Census population counts are key to districting decisions and determining political representation at the local, state and federal level, but Summit County Commissioners say within Summit County, the most important function of the data is to help paint a portrait of the county as a whole.
At the state and federal level, Census results impact district lines. A bi-partisan committee of Colorado state legislators is responsible for redrawing U.S. Congressional district lines, reallocating the seven U.S. representatives for Colorado among Colorado's residents. Summit County currently belongs to state House District 56, which also includes Eagle and Lake counties, and Senate District 16, a collection of Grand, Gilpin Clear Creek and parts of Jefferson and Boulder counties. It's District 2 for Polis's U.S. Congressional district.
Complete Census data is available online at factfinder.census.gov.
