USA Pro Cycling Challenge comes to Colorado in August

By John Henderson
The Denver Post
June 7, 2011
The two highest climbs in cycling history on the same stage. A 5,000-foot elevation change. A 6.1 percent grade over 4.8 miles. The state's name isn't in the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge, but the route that was announced Monday shows the Aug. 22-28 stage race has Colorado all over it.
“The key factor in the overall competition is altitude,” said race director Jim Birrell of Medalist Sports, the race producer, which also does the Tour of California among other races.
The highlight of the race will be Stage 2 from Gunnison to Aspen on Aug. 24. Billed “the Queen's Stage,” it will feature ascents over 12,126-foot Cottonwood Pass and 12,095-foot Independence Pass, the highest known climbs in international cycling. “We don't think another stage in the world has the physical and mental demands as the Queen's Stage,” said Shawn Hunter, race CEO and co-chairman.

Forest Service give initial green light for Peak 6 expansion at Breckenridge
Caddie Nath
Summit Daily News
June 11, 2011
Breckenridge Ski Resort's Peak 6 expansion plan took another leap toward approval Friday when the U.S. Forest Service released a long-awaited draft environmental impact statement (EIS), naming the proposal for 550 acres of new terrain the preferred alternative for the project.
The alternative includes 550 new acres of lift-served and hike-to terrain on Peak 6 within the ski area boundaries, the installation of a six-person detachable lift based on Peak 7 with a mid-point station on Peak 6, as well as the construction of a warming hut at the top of the mountain and a 150-seat guest building with a restaurant at the lift mid-point.
The expansion would allow Breckenridge to accommodate an additional 1,100 skiers per day. The proposal was identified as the best option in the draft EIS based on the resort's stated need for increased terrain to help reduce lift lines and trail crowding, public input and natural resource concerns, Fitzwilliams said.

By The Associated Press
June 13,2011
Arapahoe Basin has officially announced that they will keep the ski resort open until July 4. The Basin has been running its lifts Friday through Sunday since ending daily ski operations June 5.
A-Basin was considering offering weekend skiing through July 4 if the snow was still good. The resort had a 62-inch base last Monday and with the recent new snow things are looking even better. Arapahoe Basin has offered skiing on July 4 four times, most recently in 1997.
Elsewhere, Snowbird in Utah and Mammoth, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley and Sugar Bowl in California are among ski areas offering skiing on the July 4 weekend. Timberline in Oregon regularly offers summer skiing.
