500 inches of snow: A season to remember

By Lauren Glendenning
Summit Daily News
April 22, 2011

Amazing. Epic. Insane. Memorable. These are the words skiers and snowboarders used to describe the 2010-11 season.

In Summit County, Breckenridge passed its 17-year record of 504 inches this week — the mountain has tallied 507 inches of snow so far this season. It left its 10-year average of 347 inches in the dust, er, powder, a while ago. “I think we would have been fine (to make it to closing day) with the amount of snow we had several weeks ago, but it just continues,” Vail Mountain CEO Chris Jarnot said. “This year was great early, great consistently and great even this week. It's just been a remarkable year.”

Joel Gratz, a meteorologist who runs the website www.Coloradopowderforecast.com, said the La Nina weather pattern typically means good snow for Vail, but this year was exceptional.

Visitors named Breckenridge the best resort town for nightlife in North America this month in the OnTheSnow.com 2011 Visitors Choice Awards.

The winners were picked by the site's more than 3-million monthly visitors, who named Whistler Blackcomb, a resort in British Colombia, the overall best resort on the continent and gave nods to several others for excellence in various categories.

“The town has plenty of options for anyone,” wrote one reviewer of Breckenridge. “If you're hungry, just walk down Main Street and something will grab your attention. The best part of the time we were there was the town (itself).”

Breck doles out cash to market concert

By Caddie Nath
Summit Daily News
May 7,2011

With eyes on the approaching summer season, the Town of Breckenridge agreed to subsidize the June 16 Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt concert at the Riverwalk Center in the hope of establishing a relationship with the concert's promoter and drawing in the crowds to kick off the summer season.

Council members agreed to put up $10,000 dollars in subsidies and in-kind expense waivers, eyeing an ongoing relationship with the show's promoter, AEG Live.

Council members said the national promoter is interested in "heating up," or beginning to market the Riverwalk Center as a destination boutique venue for bigger name bands. A show with recognizable names like Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt is a first step down that road.

One of the most distinctive songwriters to come out of Nashville, four-time Grammy Award-winner Lyle Lovett is equally comfortable in pop, rock, blues and country. Eleven-time Grammy nominee John Hiatt melds rock, acoustic, folk, new wave and Mississippi Delta blues into songs recorded by some three dozen artists over the last three decades from Three Dog Night to Eric Clapton.
