Fly Fishing
There are several rivers in the Summit County area that offer excellent fly fishing opportunities.
Blue River
The Blue is one of Colorado’s Gold Medal fisheries and justly popular. The section below the Lake Dillon is a tail water that holds large fishing feeding off the mysis shrimp that come out of the reservoir. This section is fishable year-round, and the rest of the river is good from about March through November, given average weather conditions.
Colorado River
The section above Gore Canyon is well suited to wade fishing, while everything below that is better experienced from a boat. In the upper river, expect to find areas with fast pocket water, with the occasional riffles and runs. Nymphing is usually the most effective on this fast flowing part of the river. The lower section is a dry fly fisherman’s paradise you won’t want to miss.
Eagle River
Known for pocket water and fast runs, you’ll find feisty browns and rainbows along this stretch of river. There are several good access points, despite the housing developments that have sprung up along its banks in recent years. One of them is right in the town of Avon and offers good fishing in fast water. This river tends to see fewer crowds than others in the area.
The Williams Fork, South Platte and Arkansas Rivers also offer great fishing, and there are numerous high alpine lakes in the area. Check in with local outfitters for more information and latest conditions.
