Overnight visits hit a record 25.9 million in 2005, along with a big jump in spending, a survey shows.

Colorado welcomed a record 25.9 million overnight travelers to the state last year, up 1 percent over 2004 and at the highest level since the Colorado Tourism Office began tracking visitor data in 1992.

The annual visitor study released Wednesday also showed that visitor spending rose by more than $900 million, to reach $8.2 billion last year.

Most of that growth came from a 6 percent growth in leisure trips by visitors who are not here on business or to visit family - 11.7 million in 2005. Nationally, comparable trips only grew by 2 percent, according to Longwoods International, the market research firm commissioned to conduct the study.

The final placement and length of the new fence hasn’t been determined yet, but the White River National Forest recently listed the project in its quarterly update of public-land projects slated for environmental review. The idea is to optimize the skiing experience on the Peak 8 terrain, Forest Service officials said.
