Ski Resorts Ramping up for Winter
ski

By Summit Daily News Staff Report

SUMMIT COUNTY — New terrain, new lifts and new lodges will greet skiers and snowboarders across the state, as resorts have pumped tens of millions of dollars into improvements over the summer.

Among the highlights:

• Arapahoe Basin has pumped $1.2 million into improvements, including 300 additional parking spaces connected to the resort via a pedestrian tunnel under U.S. 6 and a new south-facing sun deck made of recycled materials at the Black Mountain Lodge. The resort also has expanded its snowmaking system onto the beginner Sundance trail.

• Breckenridge Ski Area will open the Peak 7 base area, the resort’s first new base since Peak 9 was established in 1971, featuring the Crystal Peak Lodge and Sevens restaurant in the Grand Lodge. Additionally, the resort is installing new snowmaking on the intermediate Peak 7 trails to ensure good skiing by Christmas.

Vail: Full Speed Ahead

By Steve Raabe
Denver Post

Vail Resorts plans to showcase at least $100 million in capital improvements this year at its five ski resorts.

The spending, which could rise to $115 million by the end of the year, is more than the combined total for all other Colorado ski areas, Vail chief executive Rob Katz said Wednesday at a news conference.

National economic weakness and a slight decline last year in Colorado's total skier visits have not caused Vail to rein in the spending program.

"We have not pulled back on a single improvement," Katz said.

The company's resorts include Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly Mountain Resort near Lake Tahoe.

36 Hrs at Keystone now Friday Night Lights

By Jonathan Batuello
Summit Daily News
September 13, 2008

KEYSTONE — Keystone Ski Resort is replacing its 36 Hours at Keystone with a ski-and-concert series called Friday Night Lights.

Friday Night Lights will occur on three consecutive Fridays starting Nov. 21, featuring skiing until 8:30 p.m. and free concerts that start about 8 p.m.

“Thirty-six was a great event that people especially loved, but we just wanted to generate more of the early season scene,” said Katie Adamson, Keystone’s communications coordinator. “A lot of resorts have (a) spring concert series but no one has (an) early concert series.”

Keystone held the 36-hour event for four years featuring round-the-clock skiing for anyone with a lift ticket and a team challenge that required completing a run down the mountain once every hour.
