Colorado snowpack hits 11 year high

Reservoir and snowpack levels around Colorado are at an 11 year high, according to figures released Tuesday by the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Statewide, the snowpack is at 120 percent of average, and with 2009 totals for January topping last year's readings, the readings are the highest since 1997, according to the agency.
It's only the third time in the last 12 years that the January snowpack level has been above the historic long-term average, state conservationist Allen Green said in a news release.

Rail Authority identifies I-70 rail options

SUMMIT COUNTY — A high-speed train capable of traveling almost 300 mph along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor could have five stations in Summit County, under a proposal being studied by the Rocky Mountain Rail Authority.
The organization is moving forward with a feasibility study that will examine if a proposed rail system crisscrossing the state along both Interstate 25 and I-70 would be practical.
Over the past three months, the organization's High-Speed Rail Feasibility Study team identified a route, rail technology and station options that can be examined during the study.

Summit Foundation awards nearly $500,000 in grants

The Summit Foundation has awarded $499,972 to 45 nonprofit agencies providing services in Summit, Park and Lake counties, a 4 percent increase over last December's grant cycle that comes at a time when many organizations are struggling for financing.
Recognizing the struggles many families are facing in this difficult economy, the committee emphasized funding to agencies that provide for the basic needs of individuals and families. br />
In addition, $149,000 was awarded in college scholarships this year to graduating high-school seniors and college freshman.
