Moose sightings inspire awe & fear in Summit
the team

By Sandy Hostetler
Special to the Daily
October 16, 2009

Lately with all the moose sightings, Frisco seems to feel a bit like that town in "Northern Exposure" where there's always a moose walking around.

Just recently there was a sighting in front of the Marina in which a bull moose the size of a 727 was walking around like he owned the place. Many people were curious & pulling over to take pictures, but please remember to enjoy the majesty from a distance as these animals have antlers that can hurt.

What do you do though if a bull moose has planted himself in your back yard & won't leave? Many Frisco & Summit County residents have been faced with this scenario as moose sightings begin to pile up like unwanted mail.

Breck home-size policy passes first reading

By Robert Allen
Summit Daily News
October 15, 2009

Home-size limit legislation intended to preserve Breckenridge neighborhoods' character received town council's preliminary, unanimous approval after several months of staff & residents working together.

The ordinance sets ratios - varying by subdivision - of lot size to a proposed home's square footage. It also sets square footage caps ranging from 4,000 for Warrior's Mark to 9,000 in Gold Flake & the Highlands.

Limits affect only above ground square footage, and a 900 square foot garage would be exempt according to the ordinance. Existing homes would be allowed an additional 500 square feet if they're at or within 500 square feet of the maximum for their subdivision.

Local ski areas make modest changes for 2009-10 season

By Robert Allen
Summit Daily News
October 23, 2009

Most improvements to local ski areas this season will be behind the scenes - but easier access and more affordable food are among several changes guests may notice in 2009-10.

While new lifts or terrain expansions were absent from discussion, ski area cheifs said they learned from last year's economic downturn. Many are hiring their workers this season from within the country.

Other changes include improved parking & grooming at Keystone, an overhaul to the Black Mountain Lodge at A-Basin & return of the skier drop-off area in Breckenridge as well as a relocation of the Trygve's pipe on Peak 8 to Country Boy on Peak 9.

Upcoming Event | Opening Day

Keystone & Breckenridge Ski Areas
November 6 & 12

We are counting down the days until Summit County's two most well known ski resorts will open. Keystone Resort will be opening the slopes for skiing and riding on November 6, while Breckenridge is anticipating to open on November 12. Loveland was the first ski area to open in North America this year, beating out A-Basin by only 3 days.
