Vail Resorts: Signs Point to Strong Ski Season
skier

By Sarah Mausolf
Vail Daily
December 9, 2009

The economic crisis is over. At least, that's what some experts say. But are recession-weary Americans ready to shell out for ski vacations and lift tickets?

Vail Resorts on Tuesday painted a cautiously optimistic picture of the 2009-10 ski season, noting that, while hotel bookings are down compared with last year, airline reservations are up and season pass sales are brisk.

Broomfield-based Vail Resorts owns Breckenridge, Keystone, Vail, Beaver Creek, and Heavenly. The company reported advanced flight bookings for the winter at the Eagle County Airport are up about 4 percent compared with last year.

Summit County picks up open space

By Bob Berwyn
Summit Daily News
December, 2009

The purchase of a 129-acre mining parcel in Mayflower Gulch, between Copper Mountain and Fremont Pass, east of Highway 91, is aimed at protecting the area from future mining and development. County open space officials sealed the deal Nov. 24 for $900,000 after years of negotiations with the owner in Florida.

“It's been a priority for us. We started working on this in 2002,” said Brian Lorch, director of the open space program. Most of the land in the spectacular high alpine basin is now owned by the county or is part of the national forest. Some adjacent land is still owned by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., owners of the nearby Climax molybdenum mine.

The previous owner of the Mayflower property, Florentine Vantine, of Florida, initially wanted $4 million for the property. That may sound like a terrifically high price, but gold reserves on the parcel are valued at $15 to $50 million, according to Dan Hinds, an environmental expert who worked with Vantine during the past 10 years to meet state mining and reclamation regulations. It would have cost about $5 to $10 million to bring the mining operation back up to speed, and the cost of protecting natural resources in the area and of working at that elevation would also be high, he said.

Tough Timing for Ski Resort Sale

By Maura Webber Sadovi
Wall Street Journal
November 25, 2009

About three years after betting big on ski resorts, Fortress Investment Group LLC is selling a large Colorado ski area and trimming its exposure to an industry that has seen demand chilled by the financial downturn.

The Copper Mountain Resort ski area is one of several that Fortress acquired in 2006 when it bought Intrawest Corp., a Canadian owner of North American resorts, luxury golf courses and leisure travel businesses for $2.8 billion in cash and assumed debt. Last year, Fortress restructured some debt related to Intrawest.

Copper Mountain, a resort with 22 chairlifts about 75 miles from Denver, is being purchased by Powdr Corp., a closely held Park City, Utah, company that owns seven other ski resorts, including Park City Mountain Resort in Utah and Killington Resort in Vermont. Representatives of Fortress and Powdr declined to comment on the sale. But a person familiar with the property said Powdr paid more than $100 million. The deal is expected to close before year's end.
